Effective Remote Demonstrations Top 10 Mistakes to Avoid

Friday, October 30th, 2009

In today’s face past world, learning and development is being generated at a much faster pace than it was 10 years ago. Organizations are growing and the need to reach out to employees, clients and potential prospects has become very challenging.  In today’s culture, we can rely on software to make our lives easier to ensure we can communicate effectively.   Software like WebEx, Adobe Connect Pro, Go To Meeting and other companies are pushing the boundaries of  remote communication.  These vendors and their innovative tools are providing users with the opportunity to take control and become more  creative with our own communication by adopting  multi-faceted tools.

These systems allow us to share:

  • Videos
  • Podcasts
  • Desktops to sample a product
  • View live meetings
  • Participate in and view live demonstrations
  • Collaborate on a project
  • and much much more

While participating in these events we have developed a certain online etiquette and it has become a very important  part of this new online community.  Not following certain rules can lead to disastrous consequences,  it can cost us relationships, potential clients and completely make us lose  all credibility.

How do we know we are doing the right thing?

To help us get through this topic, I created an e-learning module “The 5 Minute Coach”  with the topic  ” Top 10 Remote Demonstration Mistakes Made by the Presenter” . This is a list of what NOT TO  DO while you present or conduct a product demonstration.

Let me know what you think

Making Corporate Compliance a Little More Interesting

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I have taken a 200 PowerPoint deck slide presentation and I converted it into a web based Captivate training module. Below is a sample of the e-learning module that is sent to all employees for a client of mine.  This example showcases how Corporate Compliance (HIPAA) along with the help of a personalized mascot, can make your e-learning a little more interesting given all the information that has to be disseminated. This e-learning is interactive and does not go overboard to disrupt the culture of the organization.

How to Make PowerPoint Slides Come to Life

Friday, September 18th, 2009

The following e-learning example is from a client of mine and the original PowerPoint presentation was about 15-20 slides. It  had intricate details about drug hierarchy, drug definitions, drug # Identifiers and so on.  Probably not the most interesting subject for most us. However, that’s not the point,  my client had needs and requested the following, wanted the material to become more engaging, small file size for e-mail purposes, more interesting with interaction and wanted to eliminate paper distribution. In other, words they wanted some e-learning material.

I looked at the original slides and then from my perspective circled what I thought were the main points or objectives  from each slide.  By thinning out the message and by keeping the main ideas intact, this allowed me to maintain focus on the final objective.  The final output had to be maintained. After several brief consultations with my client, we were able to narrow it all down and kept my client satisfied.

My proposed solution to meet the needs of my client:

Solution: Compile the data onto one page, then create an interactive e-learning module by using Articulate Engage, make the user take control of their own interactions and peek their curiosity.  I did not need to do much convincing since my client had seen Articulate before from previous projects.  With the green light given, I was able to create a new project  and the design output on my end was about 30 minutes.

The end result proved to be a simple interaction piece where the target audience could click, read and follow in a non-linear or linear fashion (They control where they want to go).  The short training module was then sent via e-mail to respective users,  posted on their intranet and on then on their Learning Management System (LMS).

Tips: Keep it simple, keep it short, make it fun, make them interested.

Use Articulate Engage for Quick Training Deployment

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Here is an e-learning sample I created using Articulate “Engage”. This authoring software allows you to create  and communicate innovative ideas and lets your learner explore at their own pace.

Create links in your PowerPoint and watch your presentations come to life.  Use links in your e-mails to send your team a quick tutorial or use down time within your call center to keep your staff with a library of accessible training.

I like this tool because it does not require any programming skills and can be learned very quickly, virtually anyone can use Articulate and can get started on their investment with quick results.

Here is one of the many samples I have created: http://yourperformanceconsultant.com/engage.html
